about

"The Gardener" is a song about a woman who cannot have children. Still, she nurtures her garden into bloom even in the harsh climate of Montana. It's a message that says: she can still be a steward of living things, even if her body, or some outside factor deliberates that her care not be for children.

This is the final single to release from my forthcoming album Let There Be No Despair, releasing in full of May 20, 2022.

lyrics

It’s early in the evening
Montana in the spring
I’m slow to put my boots on
It’s been a long week

Well I could say the house is quiet now
But he was never really one for conversation
I’m sure my neighbors think I’m crazy
Sometimes I catch myself talking to myself when I’m out
In the garden

I used to want a lot of selfish things
Now I just wanna see my flowers grow
Get my hands deep in the dirt
And pour some water on the earth and pray
We don’t get a late spring snow

I think he used to love me once
Back before the truth was known
That my body couldn’t do her sacred duty as a woman
I guess he couldn’t bear the thought
Of having seeds he couldn’t sow

So he was gone before the snow set in
It was cold as hell but I chopped wood
And that snow can’t really last forever, oh can it
‘Cause I was raised to lean hard into the good
Yeah I was raised to lean hard into the good

Now my purple chain is making its way
Further down the fence
And they said it was a joke to plant sunflowers
Montana’s just too cold and those seeds won’t stand a chance
But they’re popping up as golden as the hour
Yeah they’re popping up as golden as the hour
